STACY TUTTLE GARDEN DESIGN
“…breathing life into your outdoor space…”
|
Do you long for someone to come along and sort out your garden?
I can help. I am a garden designer, based in Hungerford, Berkshire, specialising in creating individual gardens to suit the client’s lifestyle and budget.
I am happy to take on commissions for any project large or small. Previous work has ranged from small courtyards to gardens in excess of 1 acre and traditional, country gardens to contemporary style.
As each project is different, I have a flexible approach to my work. I offer a range of services to meet clients’ needs. This could be supplying a hand-drawn A1 or A2 scale drawing for the client to implement, to taking on a project from Design to Completion. Many clients like to use my Project management services for continuity. |

SLOPING GARDEN IN MARLBOROUGH
Before

The crumbling retaining walls were replaced and the patio was enlarged and re-laid with natural stone. The garden now has two level areas; the upper level has a secluded place to sit with a water feature which will be screened by shrubs. A rockery links the upper and lower levels.

The steps were repositioned and an archway with climbing Roses and Clematis leads to a Sundial and the secluded seating area beyond.

FRONT GARDEN WITH COUNTRY VIEWS
Before

The existing patio was long and narrow making it difficult for a 4/6-seater table. The paving was also dated. We decided to remove the lawn and introduce scented planting to surround the patio.
After

The patio has been extended and the planting is scented and colourful. As the garden is to the front of the property a trellis with a Wisteria will provide some privacy and also frame the view into the second half of the garden.
Before

The other half of the garden was little used and required some colour. The family have a great interest in Japan and are frequent visitors there. I linked this with the need to re-site the existing pond and decided to create a Stroll garden.
After

A path made up of slabs of stone leads past the pond to a seating area beyond...

Now the two areas of garden are linked by the path and also by the Wisteria on the trellis, which is at home in an English garden yet is evocative of the Orient.

The pond was in need of updating…

The new pond is a hit with the fish!

CONTEMPORARY GARDEN
The owners wanted to transform their tired garden as they were carrying major renovations on their property. They had decided on a contemporary garden and I proposed an open space for entertaining, using a variety of contrasting textures- wood, gravel, stainless steel and glass.
Before

By the kitchen door a herb garden sits in the paving which replaces the old concrete surface.
Beyond the paving, a large oval deck sits in a gravel surround. Raised rendered beds contain colourful planting. A stainless steel water feature adds to the tranquility. The water runs into linked triangular ponds and down into a rill which runs under the decking and into a circular pond.

STANDEN MANOR- A LONG TERM PROJECT

I have been involved at the Manor for the past two years. We are renovating the borders, introducing more colour and seasonal interest.

Seasonal pots with Lime Green Nicotiana and Verbena

We are gradually widening the borders to give better proportions and more scope for planting…

This year as part of the productive garden, we created a Cutting Garden. There are a series of five beds growing Tulips, Galdioli, Alstromerias, Sweet Peas, Lavatera and Lilies…

Year round colour is important. At the end of September, the border looks has lots of texture and colour.

INITIAL CONSULTATION
At this first meeting, I begin the process of getting to know the client, and discuss their requirements for the garden.
I use a detailed questionnaire, books and photographs to assess the clients taste. It is important to empathise with the client, so that I can create a garden which fits with their lifestyle, gardening abilities and budget. The client also has the opportunity to view my portfolio of previous commissions.
After this consultation, I draw up a detailed written proposal, outlining the design brief and my fees.
SITE SURVEY AND ANALYSIS
This involves detailed measuring and recording of the site, including existing plants, hard-landscaping and levels.
I take soil samples to check the soil’s pH and condition. Photographs of all aspects are a useful device when I am working at the drawing board.
Using the information provided during the initial consultation and site survey, I will create an outline plan of your garden, showing the new layout for client approval.
Once we have agreed the final layout, I will provide the final colour-rendered plan with planting detail. For a smaller project the planting plans are included in the design price. For larger projects, I charge for planting plans separately

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
For Design to Completion projects I can provide Project Management services. I work regularly with several landscapers. I am of course happy to work with a landscaper chosen by the client.
DESIGN DIRECT
This new service was initiated in 2005. It enables clients to become more involved in the design process. I create a personalised garden design or planting plan, using information supplied by the client.
Once commissioned I will supply an information pack giving details of how the client can carry out the site survey and take relevant photographs. I also ask the client to complete a detailed questionnaire. I will use this information to create an individual design.
CONSULTATION SERVICES
For some clients, a consultation visit can be useful to solve a problem within the garden- for example dealing with a shady spot, renovating overgrown shrubs or screening an eyesore.
A fee is charged for this service (hourly rate or a price for a ½ day as required, plus travelling expenses. For clients living within the Wiltshire and Berkshire, no charge will be made for travelling expenses)
